How to Style 3c Curls

The Basics

Styling 3c curls can be challenging, but they can look gorgeous and bouncy with the proper routine and products. These tightly-wound corkscrew coils are the narrowest among type 3 hair types and have the most volume. Good care can make them highly versatile in various styles, like braided top knots and high puffs. Using products specifically for your curl type is essential for maintaining healthy locks. Oils like jojoba and avocado can seal in moisture, and sleeping on a silk pillowcase can reduce breakage and friction.

Hydration

Due to their tight ringlets, 3c curls are prone to frizz, dryness, and breakage. Hydration is crucial for keeping these locks soft and healthy. Daily spraying with water, leave-in conditioners, and oils can help hydrate the strands and protect them from damage. Sulfate-free shampoos and co-washing with conditioner are recommended to maintain optimal condition. Using detangling spray or brushes can simplify detangling while reducing frizz and breakage.

Moisture Sealing

Using oils can help lock in moisture, but it’s essential to understand the difference between moisturizing and sealing. Moisturizers penetrate hair strands for maximum hydration, while sealants sit on the strands without penetrating further. Moisture sealants should be applied as the final step after applying leave-in conditioner or water-based moisturizers. Layering different moisture sealants (e.g., oil and butter) can enhance moisture retention. Coconut, avocado, olive, and jojoba oils are excellent choices for moisturizing and sealing.

Detangling

Proper detangling techniques are crucial for curly and oily hair—Detangle wet hair with a spray bottle to add moisture and reduce breakage. Use a sulfate-free hair Detangling Milk or a refreshing Spray Boost to ease the process. Section the hair into four to six segments and work through them gently, starting from the ends and moving upwards.

Styling

Curly hair tends to be dry, so extra moisture is essential. Spritzing with a hydrating mist between washes or using an oil or hair mask designed for curly locks can provide additional hydration and seal in water. Regularly using a sulfate-free shampoo, co-wash, and deep conditioner will keep the curls moisturized. Additionally, getting regular trims helps maintain the shape of the coils, preventing breakage and frizz.
